Dr. G. Richard Cohen Retires from Cohen Laser and Vision Center after 35 years in Boca Raton
In what is certainly an emotional closing chapter for both Florida’s pre-eminent family of eye doctors and their generations of patients, Dr. G. Richard Cohen has retired after over 35 years of service.
Dr. G. Richard Cohen, a popular Boca Raton ophthalmologist, has been improving the vision of South Florida residents since he opened his practice in 1991. He has performed thousands of LASIK procedures, which he began offering in 1995.
Dr. G. Richard Cohen’s philosophy and key to success has been a simple one, “We treat patients like we’d want to be treated if we were on the other side of the desk.”
A pioneer in LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery, Dr. Cohen developed and trademarked two new laser vision correction procedures. His was the first private practice to own a permanent excimer laser in South Florida.
Patients have traveled from all over the world to receive the caring treatment offered by Dr. G. Richard Cohen’s family practice, as evidenced by the map of the world with its countless pushpins that is proudly displayed in their Boca Raton office.

Not only was G. Richard Cohen’s wife Alisa Cohen Executive Director of the practice for many years, his son Joshua spent many summers working alongside his father to learn about the practice and general eye care. After studying at Harvard, Joshua eventually followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming an ophthalmologist, and joining the practice several years ago.
As his dad prepares for retirement, Dr. Joshua Cohen will carry on as the Medical Director of the practice and looks forward to carrying on the tradition of providing exceptional state-of-the-art refractive cataract and corneal surgery to South Floridians.
When Dr. Joshua Cohen is asked what makes Cohen Laser and Vision Center such a popular choice for people to seek eye care, he says, “We are a smaller practice, and we know all of our patients by name.
